Hi Ken,
I lived there briefly in the 60s, but don't remember a South Hole.
Perhaps in the area of the sewage farm and former power station site at
Blackburn Meadows is, near the Tinsley viaduct. When we were there, we
certainly knew when there was a south wind. Maybe the hole got filled
in!
