FORT STEUBEN FEBRUARY UPDATE

Today there has been a break from the ice and
snow and the sun reminds us that spring will
come. February is a good time to curl up with a
good book or watch a DVD in the evenings. But
here at Historic Fort Steuben, we are busy
“Keeping History Alive!” with programs and
activities to counteract the winter doldrums. Thanks for your support!

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: JOURNEY TO FREEDOM
The Upper Ohio Valley played an important part in
the movement to end slavery in the 19th century.
As Ohio was a “free state” and Virginia (which
included West Virginia then) was a “slave state,”
many desperate men and women risked their lives
to cross the Ohio River to freedom. An exhibit
depicting the history of slavery and the
abolition movement – particularly in southeast
Ohio – is on display as part of Black History
Month at the Fort Steuben Visitor Center. The
exhibit will run throughout February, Monday
through Friday, from 10 am to 4 pm. Special
programs are available for schools or civic
groups who can call for more information:
740-283-1787. There is no admission fee but
donations are welcome. The exhibit is made
possible by generous funding by the Esther
Simmons Charitable Trust and Wal-Mart, with
research assistance by the staff of the Public
Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County.

LINCOLN AT 200
Historic Fort Steuben will commemorate the 200th
Birthday of Abraham Lincoln with an exhibit and
programs, from April 6-24. The exhibit will cover
his life and especially note his relationship
with Ohio and Steubenville’s native son, Edwin
Stanton. Planning is still underway for speakers
and discussions. Be sure to mark the weekend of
April 18-19 for special events, including a
powerful program of music by the Civic Choral
Society and Orchestra and an opportunity to visit
the related exhibits at the Jefferson County Historical Museum.

MUSEUM SHOP RENOVATION
You may remember the old gift shop in the
blockhouse of Historic Fort Steuben. Then it was
moved to the new Visitor Center. Now we have
renovated it, making it more attractive and
easier to find things. We have new post cards as
well as well as books on Steubenville and Ohio
history. Please stop down to visit!

MEMBERSHIP DRIVE CONTINUES
We are dependent on our membership to support the
many activities and programs at the Fort.
Membership benefits include a 10% discount in the
Museum Shop, free admission to all events, and
the knowledge that you are part of an exciting
educational, historical, and cultural center for
Steubenville and the surrounding communities. If
you need a membership form, click here:

MUZZLELOADER RAFFLE
Last year’s raffle of a Lyman Industries
muzzleloader rifle was so successful that we are
offering a special package this year. Lyman’s .50
caliber Deerstalker Rifle has a 24” barrel and is
ideal for round ball or maxi hunting bullets. A
black rubber recoil pad mounted on the
Deerstalker’s handsome walnut stock makes for
comfortable shooting. Along with the rifle are
round ball and maxi ball molds and handles. We
will sell 300 tickets and $5 each until all the
tickets are sold. Tickets will be available by
the end of the month at the Visitor Center and
via the website,

BRICK SALES
The latest order of engraved bricks has been sent
to the provider and we expect to have them back
to be place by the fountain in May. There is
still room for more bricks; any ordered now until
July will be placed in October. Each brick costs
$40 and forms can be obtained at the Visitor
Center or on our website:

GENERAL DONATIONS AND SPONSORSHIPS
It costs about $200 a day to operate Historic
Fort Steuben; special events, concerts, programs
and exhibits add to those costs. You, your
company, or organization can sponsor a day or
event and be assured that your contribution would
be recognized and guarantee that Historic Fort
Steuben would continue to be an outstanding
resource for the community. Feel free to call for
more information: 740-283-1787

OHIO PROUD
Among the items produced in the area and sold at
the Visitor Center are the wonderful Dolce
Pizzelles. The sisters who began this enterprise
have a website where you can order these tasty
treats, especially for Valentines Day:

OTHER LOCAL EVENTS
Alastair Stout, organist, performing at First
Westminster on February 8, 5:00 as a part of the Concert Series.

No matter what the weather does or the headlines
say, you can be sure that Historic Fort Steuben
will still be here “Keeping History Alive!”
