This is a summary of information that has been collected on the family of 1765 (year of death) Richard Wright of Prince William County, Virginia, (place of death) that might be of interest to other researchers.
On July 18, 1733, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. B/64 Richard Wright, described as a trader, purchased from Henry Filkin 50 acres of land.
Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, 1694-1742, compiled by Gertrude E. Gray stated that on July 24, 1742, at Northern Neck Grants Book E/482 Richard Wright of Prince William County obtained a grant for 275 acres of land in Prince William County on Cedar Run on the Branches of Spillers Run and adjacent to Henry Halley, Captain Thomas Chilton, and Thomas Whitledge.
Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, Volume II, 1742-1775, compiled by Gertrude E. Gray stated that on December 23, 1742, at Northern Neck Grants Book F/64 Richard Wright of Prince William County obtained a grant for 60 acres of land in Prince William County adjacent to Spiller, Wright, and Gwatkins.
Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants, Volume III, 1775-1800, compiled by Gertrude E. Gray stated that on June 26, 1744, at Northern Neck Grants Book F/179 Richard Wright of Prince William County obtained a grant for 145 acres of land in Prince William County on Broad Run Road adjacent to Whitledge, Henry Norman, Wright’s former land, Halley, and Fletcher.
On May 23, 1761, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. P/38 Richard Wright purchased from Lewis and Elizabeth Renoe 130 acres of land on Felkinns Mill Run.
Prince William County, Virginia, Bond Book, August 1753-1782 by June Whitehurst Johnson listed the administrator’s bond dated March 5, 1765, for Richard Wright, Jr. This record indicates that Richard Wright had died before March 5, 1765, at Prince William County, Virginia. The listing of this Richard Wright as “Jr.” indicates that he was the son of Richard Wright, rather than a younger Richard Wright, since no other Richard Wright is known to have resided in Prince William County at that time.
On March 11, 1775, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. T/109 William Wright conveyed to Joseph Wright 30 acres of land formerly transferred by Richard Wright to William Wright.
There is only one deed listed in the Prince William County, Virginia, Deed Index of a conveyance from a Wright to a Wright that might qualify as the deed by which William Wright acquired this land and that was Prince William Deed K/97 dated in 1748.
On April 3, 1775, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. T/131 Mary Ann Wright and her son Joseph Wright leased to William Sidebotham 70 acres of land which had been purchased by Richard Wright from Henry Felkins. This was clearly the same land as that purchased by Richard Wright in 1733 by Prince William County Deed B/64 and as will be set forth below, Joseph Wright was the son of Richard Wright and, therefore, Mary Ann Wright was the widow of Richard Wright.
On July 29, 1777, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. T/489 Maryann Wright and her son Joseph Wright leased to William Davis 35 acres of land.
On December 1, 1787, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. X/121 Joseph Wright sold to Isaac Farrow a tract of land bequeathed to him by his father Richard Wright.
The reference to Folkens Branch identifies this land as the same as that purchased by Richard Wright from Henry Filkin in 1733 by Prince William Deed B/64 and part of the land sold by William Wright to Joseph Wright in 1775 by Prince William Deed T/109.
On July 12, 1787 at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. Y/203 William Wright conveyed to his sons John Wright and Zeley or Zealy Wright 100 acres of land adjacent to Joseph Wright and subject to a life estate in William Wright and his wife Frances Wright.
On June 1, 1789, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. X/231 William Wright of Prince William County sold to William Randolp 30 acres of land willed to William Wright by his father Richard Wright.
The reference to the land as willed to William Wright by his father Richard Wright identifies this William Wright as the son of 1765 Richard Wright of Prince William County.
On May 1, 1799, at Prince William County, Virginia, D.B. Z/448 William Wright and John Wright conveyed to Zealey Wright their interest in 100 acres of land which had been willed to William Wright by his father Richard Wright.
This record establishes that William Wright was the son of Richard Wright. The reference to the property being willed to William Wright by Richard Wright suggests that there should be a will of Richard Wright recorded in Prince William County, but none has yet been located.
This combination of deed records identifies the family of 1765 Richard Wright of Prince William County as follows:
Wife:Mary Ann or possibly Leanna (_____) Wright;
Children:1)William Wright, and
2)Joseph Wright;
Granchildren, children of William Wright:
1)John Wright, and
2)Zeley or Zealy or Zealey Wright.
