> Another Pioneer Gone
> The death of our honored townsman Mr. Samuel Stafford which occured at his
farm residence 5 miles west of the village at about 1 p.m. Monday was a very
sudden order and the announcement struck our citizens with surprise almost
incomprehensible. Mr. Stafford was a man of good constitution, robust and
healthy and he was the last man whose death people would have presumed to
lood for at so early a day. Last Saturday, apparentlly as well as ever, with
the exception of a slight cold, he was engaged all day hauling word, with
team from his farm to Davison’s dock. He went home at evening, ate supper
and mingled with his family as usual and retired for the night. About 4
a.m. his wife was awakened by him rolling over and over in the bed and
thinking it very strange that he should thus act, spoke to him to ascertain
what the matter was. Receiving no answer form her husband save a mumbling of
his words, Mrs. Stafford became alarmed and arose from her bed, procured a
light!
> and soon discoverd the serious conditin of her companion. While he was
conscious at the time his tongue was so palsied that he could not articulate
but expressed himself as suffering great pain in the head. Mrs. Stafford
dispatched her little boy for Mr. R. W. Downe, a near neighbor, who soon
arrived and assisted in doing what he could to relieve the sick man. A
physician was sent for who came before noon and pronounced the affection of
the man congestion of the brain and said he could not live a great while.
The sick man did become unconscious but lingered along until about 1:10 p.m.
the next day, Monday, when he died. Thus suddenly passed away another of
the pioneer farmers and respected citizens of Alcona Co. in the vigor and
prime of manhood Ca(?) dy and moved on to his farm werhe he has since
resided. He leaves a wife and five children to morun his loss, who have
the sympathy of a large circle of friends. The obsequies of the deceased
were held fromt he ME!

> Samuel Stafford was born in Pennsylvania in 1841 and was 38 years old the
28th day of January. In the early part of the war he went ot Indiana and
then enlisted in 101 Indiana Regiment and served his country as a soldier.
After the war he came to Saginaw and from there to this county in the fall
of 1866. He worked during the winter in the lumber woods and the following
spring purchased land for a farm. In the fall of 1868 he married to Miss
Ellen Ca(?) dy and moved on to his farm werhe he has since resided. He
leaves a wife and five children to morun his loss, who have the sympathy of
a large circle of friends. The obsequies of the deceased were held fromt he
