NOTE: In an original deed enrolled in Lenoir County on 20 Oct 1798 which
conveyed a Deed of Gift between Robert Witherington and his son, Benjamin
Witherington, ownership of the land is traced back to the original patent.
All the mentioned deeds can be found either in Craven County Deed Books or
on the Dobbs Cross Indexes except one, which indicates that deed was not
indexed. Reference - Richard "Blackledge conveyed to the said Robert
Witherington by a deed of sale Registered in the Secretary's office in Dobbs
County bearing date the first day of June in the year of our Lord one
thousand Seven hundred and sixty four". An entry between Richard Blackledge
and Robert Witherington is not found in this Book or Book 5 or 7. The
original deed can be found at the N.C. Archives in the Martha Moseley
Collection.
