Hi
I have just joined this list because I want to find information on a Arthur BARTLETT who was supposedly born in London 28.3.1813 and was brought up by foster parents Robert & Margaret SMIRTHWAITE a farmer of Methley. Arthur married Frances Wilson at Methley 26.1.1837, one of the witnesses to this marriage was the 3rd Earl of Mexborough which is significant.
The family story goes that Arthur was the illegitimate s/o Sir Charles Lamb of Battle Sussex a personal friend of the Earl of Mexborough, A letter dated 25.3.1926 from Mrs Clara G Shaw of Methley Estates states this in her letter, also the 2nd wife of Sir Charles Lamb, Lady Frances Lamb left Arthur Bartlett an annual income of £100 in her Will dated 1884.
One of my main questions to the list, is there anyone who visits the local Records Office and would know if the estate papers for the Methley Estates are deposited, the present Earl of Mexborough has told me they are. Because of my locality I am unable to visit the records office and wondered if anyone could undergo some research, I was hoping their may be some personal letters between the Earl of Mexborough and Sir Charles Lamb, or their could be some information in the estate records or even the parish records about Arthur Bartlett.
Mike
