I recently ordered some certificates from GRO with out the full particulars.
If you do not know the index but do have some other data, life year,
parents' names (for birth records), location, etc., they will look for
entries within a year. So there is still help available. Just click the
box that says you do not know the specific index number and it will take you
to a second page to fill what you do know.

The facility to apply conditional parameters to certificate
orders ceased a little while ago - a big shame. As with any any
form of transaction you now receive the item you ordered, but
with no right of return.
This doesn't help overseas customers; but I've found GRO staff
very friendly, and a telephone call usually brings some appeasement.
