Dear Martha: If no one steps forward in the immediate future, I will be
happy to do a little checking when I get home to Newport the first part of
May. Currently in FL for winter, still snowing in northern Vt. I have
access to the newspapers of that era and will take a look when I have a
chance. Let me know if anything transpires and put everything in a timeline
format as per below. It really helps focus rather than a narrative. Good
luck and let me know if you have any luck in the meantime. Regards, Sandy
McKenny

Hello,

I'm wondering if there is anyone on this list who can help me with this
family.

I am looking for the parents of Seth Ford HERRICK, who died September
21, 1925, according to Northeast Kingdom Genealogy, Janice Boytko's
site. This death appeared in the Newport Town Report.

I believe the parents to be Jane (PETTINGELL) HERRICK and Jesse Lyman
(aka J. L., Lyman) HERRICK, but need the proof from Seth's death record.

I have a death of a Jane P. HERRICK from Vt. Vital Records in Newport
March 25, 1870, age 59-4-19, daughter of Benjamin PETTINGELL and Abby
FORD.

>From VT. vital records, I have a second marriage of a Jesse Lyman
HERRICK to Sophia Amelia (MORSE) PERRY on March 20 1871 in Newport. He
was age 58, a tanner and born in Highgate, VT. He was the son of David
HERRICK and Pamelia RECORD

Jesse Lyman HERRICK is mentioned in the Gazetteer as being in Newport in
1883-84 as being in Newport Center, r 23 as a carpenter and joiner.
Seth F. is also mentioned as being on r 24, a teamster and farmer. There
is also a George A., r 5, farm laborer.

In the 1850 census I find a J. L. Herrick in Troy, Orleans as follows:
7 8, J. L. Herrick, age 38, farmer, 1200, b. VT, Jane Herrick, age 39,
Sarah age 17, Salem age 9, Mary age 4, Nebby, age 1, Truston Glidden age
14, farmer

In the 1870 census for Newport, I find 174 179 Herrick, Seth, age 37,
farmer, b. VT 2500/1500, Elizabeth, age 33, keeping house, b. VT
Dora, age 13, George, age 10, Bertie age 3, Lyman, Age 58, born Vt.
"lives with son", Charles, Age 16. There is a line marked for Seth and
Lyman in the column, "Constitutional Relation"

In the 1880 census in Salem, Orleans, VT I find a Seth T. Herrick age 64
b. VT, Elizabeth wife age 43, George age 20 son, Bertie age 12, son.
(I question the age of Seth in this census, because the wife and
children are the same as in the 1870 census. I also note the T. for the
middle initial and wonder if it could really be an F.)

I have not looked at the 1900, 1910 or 1920 census' as yet. Neither
appeared in the 1860 census.

I called the Town Clerks of both Newport Town and Newport City and
neither could find Seth Ford HERRICK's death on that date.

I suspect his death certificate would indicate his parent's names, I
also do not know when Jesse Lyman, aka J. L., Lyman, died, but do
suspect it is after the Gazetteer came out in 1883/4. I would also like
to know the date of Jesse Lyman's (aka J. L., Lyman) death.

Any help anyone can provide will be appreciated. Thank You.

Martha Rudd
