Subject: [VANDERBURG] Please exit the list if going on vacation

This is Jean [Wieland] Bails, your friendly volunteer list manager here. I
know that when you are planning to go on vacation there is much to do and
often people forget to unsubscribe to their lists before leaving. It would
seem like a very minor thing, I know but soon your mail box does exceed
storage allocation (especially for Hotmail.com addresses) and one million
people X 10 lists X 3 bounced mails for each mail sent can add up to a
significant system crisis/failure for both your ISP and for Rootsweb.com and
so please take a minute to unsubscribe before leaving.

To unsubscribe: send a blank e-mail with only the single word (= a computer
command)
unsubscribe
write it in the subject box and again in the message area.
Address it to

If you belong to many lists, too many to remember, there is a convenient way
to be reminded. Go to www.rootsweb.com and scroll down to Password Central.
When you create a password (or if you have forgotten the password you
creaated before) it will be sent to you/confirmed. Using this password, you c
an request the addresses of all the lists you subscribe to and this will be
sent almost immediately. It is good to save this e-mail for reminder to
re-subscribe after your vacation. There is no global way to unsubscribe or
re-subscribe however. You will still need to send command e-mails to each
list. See above for VANDERBURG-L.

If you are changing ISPs or screen names, etc. please take the time to
unsubscribe to lists using your e-mail address before the change. Then
subscribe again using the new address. Please do not forget. But if you do
accidentally forget, you cannot unsubscribe using the new address. Then you
will need to contact me to unsubscribe:

Then I must go on-line, find your old e-mail address and delete it. It is a
most unpleasant thing to do very often. It takes much more time for me to go
through the process than it would take you as there are many safeguards in
place in this process.

Please understand that parameters have been set so that any listmail sent to
you by rootsweb.com, if rejected on your end x3, causes automatic removal
from
the list.

So why not let the software at Rootsweb do the work for us? Well, at certain
non-peak times, it can and does. But at high traffic times (for bounces)
such as vacations, holidays and ISPs going out of business, the volume is too
high and threatens system failure. Remember the million people X 10 lists,
etc?

Well, this e-listmail is much longer than it probably had to be. I would like
to end by thanking all of you for being such good list members. I have heard
horror stories from other list managers but none of that applies to this
list. My only regret is that you do not use the list more often as a
significant
genealogy tool. Don't be shy, get your inquiries and family line out there.
Sometimes results come unexpectedly from others reading your messages later
in the archived lists. This week someone sent me a photo copy of my
husband's great-great grandfather's marriage application (it was awesome to
see his signature) from a BEALS inquiry I made 3 years ago. I am glad I made
the inquiry now.

Best Wishes in your genealogy searches,
Jean [Wieland] Bails
