I have a very? unusual case of a Vail family in Ohio. Perhaps she is connected to my Vail family. My Phebe Vail was born in NY 1796. She moved with her mother and stepfather to Licking County Ohio around 1815. John Adams and Shara Potter Vail. Alot of the family headed to Illinois around 1837 and settled around the Mattoon area and Clark County. John Silas Vail is one I know for sure settled in Illinois. In 1815 there was a newspaper article which stated an Dr. Edward Vail and Daniel or David arrived in Licking county Ohio. I know there were Pierce in Licking County also. Some of the family continue from Licking County to Iowa. I hope some of this information may give you a lead on your Eleanor. Wanda ??

By the time she was in South Dakota, she was widowed and carried her last
husband's surname, HUNT. Thank you for the hints. I have tried just about
everything close I can think of. There were a number of Vails in Ohio during the
early 1800's and I'm sure one of them was her family. Which one? This is the
elusive answer.
?
Thanks again,
Karen

Just a guess here, but I would try looking for Vial or Viall.? Many of them
moved in that direction.? Also out to South Dakota and Montana.

I am still searching for the parents of Eleanor. The census records state she
was born in Ohio, married at age 17 in 1849, naturally, the year before complete
listings of households, which would have given her parents names. She is listed
for the last time in South Dakota on the 1910 census for Custer County. Census
records also state her father was born in New York and her mother in Ohio. She
was married 3 times, to Henry Havens in 1849 and divorced Sept 1869. They had 4
children. By 1870 she was married to Nathan P. Gregg, with whom she had a
daughter in abt 1871. After Mr. Gregg's death in 1887, she was married to A. J.
Hunt in abt 1898. Has anyone out there compiled the VAIL families who were born
in New York and moved on to Ohio? If I could even find a death certificate
somewhere it might say who her parents were and exactly where she was born. I've
never been able to find a death certificate anywhere. This is just a brief
scenario of her life as I know it. If you have a!
ny suggestions, I'm open to any help you can give. Thank you in advance.
