VIRGINIA BEACH - Betty Tipton ‍Edwards of Virginia Beach died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Pine Meadows Assisted Living, Woodstock, Va.

  
She was born July 11, 1923, in Mount Airy, N.C., and grew up in Hillsville, Va. She was the daughter of George Ellison ‍Edwards and Aline Foster ‍Edwards of Hillsville. Her only brother, George Foster ‍Edwards, died in action during World War II.

  
She was a graduate of Longwood
University, Farmville, Va., Pan-American Business College Richmond,
Va., and Appalachian State University, Boone, N.C. As a librarian, she
taught at Virginia Beach High School and Tidewater Community College,
Virginia Beach.

  
She was a member of the National
Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Princess Anne
County Chapter, a member of the Virginia Beach Library Association, the
Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, and a member and
past chair of the Princess Anne County Republican Party.

  
She volunteered at many of


 

Virginia Beach’s landmarks
including the Old Coast Guard Station Museum, the Boardwalk Art Show,
Neptune’s Art and Craft Show, and Holiday Lights on the Boardwalk.

  
She is survived by her first
cousin, W. Rush Gardner and his wife Dorothy Warner Gardner of Warsaw,
Va.; and a number of other cousins.

  
A graveside service will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at the Wilkerson Memorial Cemetery, Hillsville.
