VMI class of 1885, was incensed by what he and other Cadets considered an
unfair punishment meted out to his roommate for some springtime hijinks. He
turned his valedictory address into a scorching attach on VMI’s faculty and
administration. Memb. of the Brd of Visitors were so outraged that they
refused to give Winston his diploma. 101 yrs later in 1986, his grandson,
Dr. Nat T. WINSTON of Nashville, TN convinced the current Brd of Visitors to
rescind the order and Cadet WINSTON was awarded his diploma posthumously.
