Smyth Countys oldest WW I veteran is laid to rest. (Born Buchanan Co.)
Robert Neil Davis, age 100, formerly of Tazewell and Marion, died
Friday, Aug. 27, 1999 at Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie VA.
Davis was born Nov. 9, 1898 in Buchanan County, the son of the late
Alfred and Delilah Gilbert Davis, Buchanan County natives.
He was known to many as "Shorty" and was the last of his immediate
family. He was a farmer for most of his life and had lived in Grundy,
Berwind, Tazewell, Chilhowie and Marion.
He had served in France between 1918 and 1919 during which time he
was awarded a European Expeditionary Medal. He served in the U.S.
He was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was preceded in death by his first wife of 54 years, Rosa A. Ball
Davis; a grandson, Ronald Davis; a great-granddaughter, April Dawn
Clifton; and two sisters.
Survivors include his second wife, Nancy Owens Davis of Marion; four
daughters, Mrs. Ellen Ramey, Mrs. Bob (Edith) Booth and Mrs. James
(Edna Newman) Horn, all of Tazewell, and Mrs. Gene (Arbutus) Echols
of Emory; one son, Robert O. Davis and wife Viola of Elizabethton TN;
nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; great-great-grand-
children, nephews and nieces.
