Edward Richard Wilson McCandless died December 15 in Columbus, NC, at age
96. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of John H. and Rebecca C.
McCandless. He graduated from Cheltenham High School and earned degrees in
Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration at Temple University. He
worked for Link-Belt Company as a Design Engineer and served in the Navy as
an Aeronautical Engineering Officer for four years. At the end of WW II he
was ordered from the Philippines to Washington, D.C. as the Navy's Head
Engineer for aircraft maintenance in the Bureau of Aeronautics. Released
from active duty, he became a civilian in the same bureau and rose to Chief
Civilian Analyst for all Navy and Marine Aeronautical Weapons Programs. He
retired as Deputy Director of the Navy's Office of Management Information.
In the Naval Reserve he held the rank of Commander.

In 1972 he and his wife, the former Sara Henderson of Savannah, GA, moved to
Flat Rock, NC. He served Historic Flat Rock, Inc. as an officer and worked
to gain the community's Village status. He was a Vestryman at St. John in
the Wilderness Episcopal Church. His wife Sara died in 1991. He is survived
by a sister, Helen M. Dey of Seattle, WA, and by two sons, John H.McCandless
of Flat Rock and the Rev. Dr. Richard L. McCandless of Akron, Ohio, five
grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be sent to
St. John in the Wilderness, POB 185, Flat Rock NC, or Historic Flat Rock
Inc., POB 295, Flat Rock 28731.
