Carolyn Hartman Brinsmade
(07/21/2003) Carolyn Hartman Brinsmade, a resident of the Wimberley area for
several years, passed away in a Houston hospital on July 17, 2003. She was
born in Seattle, Washington, on March 24, 1930, to Harold Hoover Hartman and
Emma Schmitz Hartman, both members of prominent pioneer families of Seattle.
Carolyn attended public schools in West Seattle, where she was reared at her
family home located on the shore of Puget Sound and overlooking the
magnificent snow-capped Olympic Mountains. She also attended the University
of Washington in Seattle, and in the early 1950's moved to Houston where she
subsequently met her husband, Lyon Brinsmade. After her marriage to him in
the 1970's, she began traveling with him to the Wimberley area on weekends,
holidays and other occasions in order to enjoy the natural blessings of life
that this area provides and that we all admire so much. She was an avid
gardener (particularly of flower-bearing plants), a lover of wildlife and
domestic animals (especially cats), and she mastered the arts of homemaking
and gourmet cooking. In her spare time she enjoyed mystery novels and plays
and listening to political and other debates. Carolyn was preceded in death
by her eldest sister, Emmy Hartman Soderberg, as well as by her two children
from a prior marriage, Sheila Ann Lister and Mary Carol Lister. She is
survived by her husband of some 25 years, Lyon L. Brinsmade; two
step-daughters, Christine Tillman of Wimberley and Louisa Brinsmade of
Austin; an older sister, Janet Hartman Skaden of Seattle; and numerous
nieces and nephews, as well as cousins and other relatives. Her nieces and
nephews in the Seattle area include Janet Lawler Huguenin and husband, David
Huguenin; Susan Lawler Bohman and husband, Craig Bohman; Catherine Soderberg
Spence and husband, Tom Spence; and John A. Soderberg, Jr. and fiancee,
Carrie Lacher. Nieces and nephews in other areas include Carol Ann Smith and
husband, Milton Smith, and Patricia Turner and husband, Ted Turner, all of
Dallas, Texas; Ann Hudson De Felici of Prince Frederick, Maryland; Charlotte
Odom of St. Francisville, Louisiana; Robert Bruce Brinsmade of Orlando,
Florida; Bruce Bessey and wife, Sue Bessey of Atlanta, Georgia; Alicia
Bessey and husband, Tom Woodward of Charlottesville, Virginia; Virginia
Bessey and husband, Tim Zimmerman of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; John Bessey and
wife, Linda Beasey of Cincinnati, Ohio; Diana Bessey and husband, Kevin
Keough of Cleveland, Ohio; and Claudia Bessey and husband, Mike Anton of
Washington, D.C. Carolyn was an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal
Church in Wimberley, where she served on the Altar Guild and in other
capacities. She also served on the Board of Directors of St. Stephen's
Cemetery, Inc. Funeral services will be held beginning at 2:00 p.m. on
Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wimberley,
followed by graveside services at its adjoining St. Stephen's Cemetery. The
Rt. Rev. James E. Folts, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, will
officiate the services in collaboration with the Rev. G.M. (``Mac'') Keeble,
Rector of St. Stephen's, and other clergy and lay assistants. Honorary
pallbearers will be the members of the Altar Guild of St. Stephen's
Episcopal Church, and active pallbearers will be Wesley Anderson, John
Bessey, Connie Egan, Alberto Manterola, Albert Sternthal and Milton Smith.
In lieu of flowers, Carolyn's family and friends suggest that contributions
may be made in Carolyn's memory to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church (Building
Fund) or to St. Stephen's Cemetery, Inc. (Perpetual Maintenance Fund),
addressed to P.O. Box 1709, Wimberley, Texas 78676. Funeral Arrangements by
Thomason Funeral Home, Wimberley, TX, 512-847-2226.
