Yes, that is correct. The law was changed in 1893 because of the death of
Prince Arthur, Duke of Clarence in 1892. He was heir to the then Prince of
Wales (Edward VII) and Princess Mary was his fiancee. She had been prepared
as the future Queen and basically her training was going to waste! The law
was changed, and in 1894 Mary was engaged to Arthur's brother, George. They
became George V and Queen Mary!
As a sideline, there is a Jack the Ripper conspiracy theory that surfaces
from time to time that Prince Arthur was Jack, and his position protected
him. Sounds a bit like Diana, doesn't it?
