Hi all:

I would like people on this list to please stop including the entire
thread about this subject in their replies!

This discussion has recurred on numerous Rootsweb lists in the past. If
you share your information with others, sooner or later someone less
scrupulous in their own research will plagiarize it. I agree that those
who expand their tree to 150,000+ people probably haven't done the
research. I do not belong to GR but have seen this on Ancestry, where
very poor quality and incorrect data is on other people's trees. This
is also true of One World Tree and similar ventures. Occasionally,
though, they do get it right, and these trees can be a resource for the
rest of us, but like the IGI we know we need to thoroughly check the
information.

As far as genetic testing goes, I would not rely on it too much. I have
done most of my research online for the last ten years and still have
only just over 1,000 people in my tree, but all of them have been
personally researched, with a lot of help from the Rootsweb community
and others, such as OPCs and even individuals who have gone to the
trouble of getting copies of the parish registers and sending them to
me, etc. If I had no online sources, I would not have been able to get
this far. I am very thankful to those who have helped me, and always
willing to help others where I can.

If you're looking for living relatves, sooner or later they tend to show
up, anyway. I'm in contact with quite a number of cousins, far and
wide, thanks to careful research. Those that have shared information
about living relatives with me can be assured that I won't pass that
information along to any but other living relatives whose credentials
check out.
