Thanks Colin - I hadn't thought about them being separated. (groan!)
There appeared to be no relatives ..... certainly none were ever mentioned,
so they would have been at the mercy of the "the state". In looking at the
records of the NSSD, while there are a number of sets of siblings, there is
nothing to say that the "single" children did not have siblings elsewhere.
