Subject: Horsham Union Workhouse - Ariel photo possibly 1920's
Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 15:50:41 +0100

Finally after months of hunting a photo down I have found one by sheer
luck. The photo I believe dates from the 1920's and shows the workhouse
from a slight elevated angle the whole workhouse and its surrounding
area (Crawley Road) and the Infirmary, and a whole stack of fields where
there are now houses... It's a great photo. Plus I have a photo of the
chapel that was in it and a side view of the workhouse as it was.

If I get permission from the provider of the photo I will be publishing
it on a Non-profit website that I am currently working on, which I hope
to have contributions from various people from on its history etc..

The website will be:

http://www.horshamworkhouse.co.uk (There's nothing up there yet
though...)

Have been to what Mary H believes was the master's house
(http://www.institutions.org.uk/pictures/workhouses/horsham_union_workho
use.htm), and have spoken to the current owner, she can't confirm that
it was or wasn't but had seen the whole complex before it became flats
and told me how beautiful it all was... She saw the ariel photo I had
and noticed her house was not on it... Her house, whether it was the
master's house or not, was built in 1930. Another building on the photo
she believes was built in 1920 something... So we reckon the photo dates
from the 20's.

With regards to my website, if anyone wants to contribute any
information or any stories from whatever of it's eras
(workhouse/canadian base hospital or Forest Hospital) I would be more
than grateful and am happy to idenitfy you or not...

Please please contribute!

Many thanks,
Marcus
