Hi

Thanks for your reply. So far I have had any luck even with variations in
spelling of the fathers name--the obvious ones have been checked (HOLLIDAY,
HALIDAY etc.) to no avail. I also wondered if perhaps he was not the
father, but named. I also wondered if perhaps he fathered the child, but
died before its birth; but why the "occupation" for the father, and why no
mention of his death on the certificate? Not only that, the oldest child
emigrated to Canada as a home child, and she put her father's name on her
marriage certificate and did not indicate deceased, nor did one of her
brothers who remained in England; his marriage certificate names his father
and an occupation (that was a falsehood from my research so far) of
policeman. I have not found Archibald in any jails on any censuses so far;
at least not in the immediate area. Also have never found any death record
for him at any time. He just up and disappeared! He was born in Scotland;
perhaps he returned "home"? This is my brick wall for sure! There is some
family "mystery" here; as the mother's family lived in relative wealth in a
nearby town (well enough off to own their own separate house and have a live
in domestic), and yet they left their daughter and grandchildren to live in
the workhouse for at least 3+ years (up to seven or more possibly). None of
it seems quite right; but without the workhouse records it will be difficult
to straighten out what happened and why.

Cindy
