Hi Isabel
I had a look through the Workhouse records - which were fortunately quite
easy to read - but no sign of your family. Very few children indeed.
Just a side note: I did find a child Florence HAIGH, age 5 (birthplace
recorded as unknown); a William HOCK, age 4, born in Woolwich; a William
JAMES, age 4 (or 9?), born Woolwich; & a Harriet McKAY, M, age
(40-something; can't read), born Tunbridge Wells;
It's sad to think all all these unfortunate souls in here. Good to hear
that William was admitted to Barnardos. What happened to Harriet & Florence?
Regards
Jill

HI Jill:
Thank you for checking to see if my relatives are listed in the Woolwich
Union Workhouse.
Harriet Wimble (nee Symond), William James Wimble (Admitted to Barnardo,Age
3 years, 8 months -on 3rd June 1890, born 13 September 1886 at
Plumstead)Sister - Florence Wimble (Age 5)
Story:
Barnardo reports:Application for this child's admission was made in the
first instance by letter, by the mother, who afterwards at our request, came
to Stepney. She brought with her a note of recommendation from Mr. E.W.
Thomas, Secretary of the London Female Preventive and Reformatory
Institution, of 200 Euston Road. Mr. Thomas wrote:- Nearly a year ago the
mother applied to me to take up her case, she then being an inmate of the
Woolwich Union Workhouse. I admitted her, having learned that she was the
deserted wife of a worthless man who had been in the army. leaving her with
a little boy and girl who were both in the Union also. Soon after, I was
informed that her husband threatened to remove the children and send them
abroad. She naturally removed the children - hence her present difficulty.
Allow me to add that if the little boy can be taken I will help the mother
and the little girl.
At the present time Mrs. Wimble is acting as laundry-matron at Mr.
Thomas's Home at 459 Holloway Road, but is receiving no salary. For some
months before William's admission both the children were living there with
her; and the little girl still does so. The father had been a sailor in the
Royal Navy, and was in receipt of a pension. Afterwards he worked in the
Woolwich Arsenal, but prior to the desertion had been doing nothing for a
long time, the wife going out to work and the husband selling off the house
bit by bit.
The father was found by the parish authorities and made to contribute to
the support of his children in the workhouse. A few months ago it came to
his wife's knowledge that he had resolved to send them to America, where he
is said to have a married sister. The mother thereupon removed them herself,
and has been allowed to keep them with her at the Home.
You may not be able to help me as your records are 1891 and this happened
prior to that date.
Thanks again,
Isabel
