Hi Caroline,

Until the start of the NHS in the late 1940's, the workhouses were the only
hospitals available to most people and increasingly became the last refuge
of the old and infirm.

The By order burials are odd - I would imagine they were perhaps coroners
cases where there was no family or perhaps they were unidentified people who
died in the workhouse, the Unions were under a legal obligation to deal with
burials if there was no family to pay for it.
