Family History News
No 30

Hi, welcome to this 30th Family History News.

Now back in the country after three weeks working overseas there’s plenty to
catch up on.

There have been plenty of new subscribers over the last three weeks, my
apologies to you for this gap! Usually this newsletter comes out weekly but
sometimes I am away with work and unable to get the newsletter out. Anyway I
am back now, slightly jet lagged but hopefully still making sense!

In Family History News 29 I asked about cleaning a gravestone for one of our
subscribers, thanks to everyone who replied, and especially thanks to Jim
Fisher who recommended Rod Neep’s website at
http://www.neep.demon.co.uk/mis/ which contains more information than I
could ever reproduce here!

The Essex Society for Family History has changed is web address. The new URL
for this Society is now http://www.esfh.org.uk

The Strict Baptist Historical Society has moved to a new website at
http://www.strictbaptisthistory.org.uk/ with a greatly increased content
about Strict Baptists in the UK.

Press Release from Genfair
We received the Following press release from Genfair recently. It seems they
have hit the figure of ten thousand items for sale. This is a truly
significant achievement making GENfair the best online bookshop for
Genealogical materials. It is a real shame that this service of offering
small societies a place to exhibit their goods has not been achieved by the
obvious candidates, either the Federation of Family History Societies, or
the SoG who offer some but not have not developed this service. However we
must congratulate Mike Spathaky for doing this, and for putting in the hard
work involved. The beauty of this service is that it is offering not only
the books that you can find in a bookshop, on Amazon or on the SoG or FFHS
sites but also many many more that are not. For instance local publications
of MI’s and Census information and much more.

In case any of you are wondering I have no connection whatsoever with
Genfair! I just think it is a job well done! Well here is the press release:

GENfair tops 10,000 items for sale.
News
Less than two years after its launch in January 1999, GENfair, the online
family history fair and genealogy bookstore, now has over ten thousand
purchasable items on its website at www.genfair.com.There are now over
eighty separate "stands" at GENfair which is an e-commerce version of the
traditional family history fair. Over fifty family history and local history
societies are represented along with nearly thirty other suppliers.A sister
website, GENfair OZ, has recently been launched at www.genfair.com/oz to
sell the products of Australian Societies.

Background history
GENfair was launched in January 1999 filling a need for UK Genealogy
Societies to reach a wider, international market for their vast range of
publications. Starting with just ten societies it rapidly established a
reputation as an easy-to-use webshop and a business that gave fast,
efficient delivery with excellent customer service. It is now a major focus
website for the Internet genealogy community. The support of UK Family
History Societies from the start was a key factor in generating customer
confidence. Many societies promoted GENfair through their own websites, the
relevant county genealogy mailing lists and their own Journals, often
recommending their members to pay subscriptions through GENfair. A further
boost was given by the granting of Which?Web Trader status by the Consumers
Association in recognition of GENfair's fair trading and privacy policies.
Through GENfair, family history enthusiasts around the world have discovered
the wealth of publications available from UK family history societies, and
have found a convenient way to buy them, with a fast, friendly service and
no currency conversion hurdles.

Webpage reviews
http://freespace.virgin.net/donald.brown1/durnfords/
Website of the Durnford family originating in the small Wiltshire village of
All Cannings. From here though the roots spread far and wide and the website
reflects this fact well. There is a written family history, excel
spreadsheets of the records of Borth, Marriage and Death (for this you will
need to be using Internet Explorer) as well as a personal research diary
which adds more interest. The basic bones of the family history are added to
well with a personal touch and additional information. A very well compiled
website

http://ds.dial.pipex.com/town/square/vg12/
Wealth of information on the City and County of Armagh in the North of
Ireland. Very useful extracts from Lewis' Topography, and various guides &
directories, there is also a collection of views of Armagh. This will be a
very useful site for anyone with ancestors in this area, really putting the
flesh on your skeleton of research. The site is framed, but for once this is
very useful, as the site is set up in a way that would be very difficult to
navigate without the frames

http://www.rootsweb.com/~wlscfhs/llanindex.htm
Llanelly Historical Society page Interesting collection of information on
Llanelly, including files of burials, marriages & baptisms as well as lots
of other information on the area & lists. Attractively presented site,
although the main problem is that most of the files are in PDF format,
meaning you will need either to have Adobe, or to download it, which is
relatively easy to do anyway.
