Sam,
Thanks for the information on the area of Horse Creek and the Reedy River
where my Thomas's were located. Sorry about my delay in responding.
I did find my John Thomas in the 1790 Census of South Carolina in the
Greenville District. On page 69 of the 1790 Census in Ninety - Six District,
Greenville County were these Thomas men: Colonel John Thomas with his two
sons John Thomas Jr., and William D. Thomas.
On page 70 in the second column were these Thomas men:
John Thomas
Isaac Thomas twice
Rubin Thomas
John Kemp/Camp
Thomas Kemp/Camp
On the same page were a host of neighbors who showed up in DeKalb Co. Ga. in
later years.
I don't know if this John Thomas was related to the Isaac and Rubin Thomas
nor do I know where they came from. I do know that John named one of his
sons Isaac.
I haven't looked into land grants for John Thomas in S.C. but I do know he
may have first been in Newberry Co. before he bought land in Greenville Co.
I found this deed in Greenville Co. in Deed Book A or B on page 111 -112.
Dated 16 Nov. 1789 - Power of Attorney - I John Thomas, of Newberry Co.,
appoint my trusty friend Thomas Lewis of Greenville Co. my true and lawful
attorney, to recover two tracts of land in Caswell Co. N.C. on Hogan's Creek
descended to the said John Thomas as the lawful heir to John Thomas,
deceased, his father, formerly of N.C.
Wit: Thomas Camp, John Camp.
Greenville Co. Deed Book C - page 22 - 6 March 1790 - Thomas Lewis
(Greenville Co.) to John Thomas (same) for 100 lbs. sold 300 acres of land;
border: joins Chandler on Horse Creek of the Reedy River. Signed Thomas
Lewis.
Wit. Thomas Camp, Hosea Camp, and Mary Camp.
Greenville Co. Deed Book E - page 109 - 25 Sept. 1797 - Thomas Camp and wife
Mary (Greenville Co.) to John Thomas (same); for 30 lbs. sold 68 acres on
waters of Reedy River; border: Thomas Camp, John Camp, Peter Ragsdale, and
William Williams... signed Thos. Camp and Mary's mark "X";
Wit: Benjamin Arnold, & Larkin Camp.
CASWELL CO. N.C. DEEDS
CC N.C. Deed Book A - page 104 - 26 Nov. 1778 - John Thomas of South
Carolina to George Allen Davies of Caswell Co., for 25 lbs., 150 acres on N.
side of Hogan's Creek adj. to George Whitton.
CC N.C. Deed Book E - page 48 - 5 July 1779 - John Thomas of Caswell Co. and
James Thomas of S.C. to Robert Dickens of CC, for 125 lbs., 240 acres on
both sides of Deep Creek, said land devised to John and James Thomas by the
last will and testament of John Thomas their late father, proved in Orange
Co.
I haven't done a thorough search in Newberry Co. yet so I don't know if John
Thomas got any kind of a land grant there. I've only looked at some
abstracted books for Newberry. There was a James Thomas who left a will in
Newberry but I've not been able to connect him to this John Thomas. I need
to do some more research.
I haven't checked Revolutionary War Soldiers to see if John fought in that
war. The time period that he sold land in Caswell Co., we were in the middle
of the Rev. War, so I need to check that. I guess I need to check the
Washington and Charleston District S.C. records also.
Thanks a lot Sam.
