That's actually something I hadn't thought of until just recently when I was researching my Cox line out of Madison and Limestone counties, AL. I found out that all territory above the TN river was actually TN until a certain time.

Sometimes, it's really hard to think outside the lines of the county that you believe your ancestors came from but once the history starts opening up for you, you realize that there was a time when there were no lines and the lines started somewhere. The mergers, the divisions, the formations....sometimes it's all very confusing but what an adventure! :)

How one keeps up with it all is a miracle.

had someone recently insist to me that their ancestor didn't know where they
were born...Virginia or Kentucky...it said one thing on this census and the
other thing on that census. I just happened to mention the fact that they
could have easily been born in Virginia pre, 1794 and the same area be
Kentucky post 1794

It might have been confusing to tell the census taker that "I was born in
Virginia in 1790 but it is Kentucky now". The census taker just took a
guess as to what to actually write
