Hi Linda,

You might be surprised to find out that a great many widows leave their
home's phone number in their husband's name. Some for the rest of their
lives. I don't know if it's a New England thing. But, I do know it's
considered a safety thing.

"Bad guys" will look in phone books and find "female phone numbers" and
consider the thought that they could live alone. And, nowadays, "bad guys
/ gals" look on-line for web sites you use, or www.411.com and look for
"female phone numbers."

I have a "KIDDER distant cousin" in NH who is an unmarried lady, and I've
written / e-mailed to her for ~8 years. But, her e-mail address has
changed, and I think she also changed her phone number. I tried the usual
ways to get her current mailing address, and it is "UNLISTED."

You mentioned "address books" and I am a "keeper" and I have them going back
20-30 years. However, it might take me a while to find the very old ones.
I'm lucky most of my uncles/aunts/cousins have lived in the same places.
I can offer one "household hint." I keep my current "address book" in the
form of a small box of Index cards. I keep the addresses on the cards,
and replace them when needed.

Along the same subject, something else I have kept is my "wedding
invitation list" from the 1960's - also in the form of Index cards. I
took it out a couple years ago and was reminded that my father's cousins had
been invited. Even though I kicked EX out in the 1970's, it is
interesting to look through the names and remember who we knew in the 1960's
!

There is also a better on-line searching-thing for finding people, but I
don't have it memorized. And, if you type one word differently, you get
someone's personal web site. So, I'll have to go find it.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)
