Jeanne posed an interesting question. I have another side. My English great
grandfather, Charles Pooke, was a farmer in Devon, England. In 1851 he
moved to Tilbury, Ontario. He learned that he could have much more acreage to
farm in Ontario than he could in Devon, so most of his family came with him
except the older children who chose to remain in Devon. My grandfather, Charles
Jr. was only about six months old when they moved there. He eventually
became an insurance agent and immigrated to the U.S. where he met his future
wife, my grandmother, Emma Hildreth.
