The posts are done in plain text, so if you used html or rtf to send the
post, it is converted to plain text.
You reply about formatting footnotes look fine to me in the NON-digest post.

I replied to a post in the list (I get the Digest) and while it looked just
fine in my email message form, it sure looked awful when it appeared in the
Digest. But I do not know how to get to the list online so this is the only
way I can do it.
