I am looking for my family coming from County Down. My father was given to the
Barnardo organization at the age of 4 in Belfast. His mother-Georgina Johnston
was injured in a fire and couldn't keep him. I am trying to find out what has
happened to her and what other family members may still be in Ireland. She was
born around 1887 and has an older sister who married a Ferguson from County
Tyrone. My grandmother was a domestic and worked in many places i.e. Bangor,
Balloo, Kildress. Last address 87 Ballymagee st. in Bangor.

Hi Judith, check out http://www.emeraldancestors.com/. All the Northern Irish
birth, death, and marriage certificates a
re there. You can search the index
free. The usual way to proceed is to obtain your father's birth certificate.
that'll have an address where they lived when he was born. It'll name parents,
or at least his mum if she was not married. Then if she was married you look for
her marriage certificate. That'll ID her parents, etc, etc. If you know the
location and the religion you may be able to search church records to locate the
sister, etc, in baptismal records. The right strategy depends on a lot of info
you don't provide: her marital state, whether or not you know the parish of
origin.
Unfortunately the earliest census is 1901 (that survives). It is not well
indexed and almost impossible to use without knowing an address. Frequently the
address is obtained from a vital record. However that could change at any time.
The Dublin 1911 census is indexed and on line free:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ Eventually they do it all and maybe
someone else will. Usually you have to hire someone to research them now, in
Ireland. I can give you some suggestions privately.
You can learn a lot from Emerald Ancestors without paying, if you put your
noggin to it. Rejoice that we have it. The British Gov just announced it had
failed to scan and index English vital records after paying a fortune to a
German firm. I guess they should have hired an Irish one, eh??!!!!
Emerald Ancestors has ONE birht of a Georgina Johnston: 1872Georgina JOHNSTON
In Co. Down too!
Also be aware of http://www.irish-roots.ie/ - which will serve as a central
search for all the various records in Irish counties. Down IS on line. The
Down/Antrim search page only is here:
http://antrimdown.brsgenealogy.com/index.php?&set=yes
This'll take y ou to the Ulster Historical Society. Here is what they have:
Birth Records for Co. Antrim & Co. Down7
Marriage Records for Co. Antrim & Co. Down4
Death Records for Co. Antrim & Co. Down4
None of the births might be right if y our ancestors was married. You may not
know.
The Ulster Histo
rical Society may or may not be the group to hire (if you hire
someone). I've had spotty results with them. This is what they got, but again,
the births may be 'no goes' if she was married:
Civil BirthJohnstonGeorgina1878Co. Antrim
Civil BirthJohnstonGeorgina1896Co. Antrim
Church BaptismJohnstonGeorgina1896Co. Antrim
Civil BirthJohnstonGeorgina Sarah1898Co. Antrim
Civil BirthJohnstonGeorgina Morrison1900Co. Antrim
Civil BirthJohnstoneGeorgina1917Co. Antrim
Civil BirthJohnstonGeorgina Pearson1918Co. Antrim
A couple years ago you would have almost no hope of getting an answer without
commisioning work in Ireland. Now you can do a lot of research yourself at a
reasonable price.
Best of luck!
