Dear List,

Is there anyone researching the Freeborn families of Portsmouth, Rhode
Island. Taking the suggestion to heart to search in New England for my
ancestors I find that there was a large collection of Freeborn fmailies in
Portsmouth, Rhode Island. One Gideon Freeborn even bought 500 acres of land
in Pennsylvania. They also married into the Tallman family in Portsmouth
and the Tallman family eventually married into the Wharton family of
Pennsylvania. There seems thus to be a Freeborn connection with
Pennsylvania. My Freeborn, Hill Freeborn, first appears in the PA records
in 1768 when he marries Martha Glyn at Christ Church in Philadelphia. Bucks
and Philadelphia were two of the original counties of PA and are located
adjacent to one another. Could it be that the Freeborns did spill over into
Philadelphia (Gideon left the 500 acres in Bucks County to his daughters
equally). I am sure this is a long shot as it appears these Freeborns were
apparently Quakers and I have always been told that Hill Freeborn was Scotch
Irish but perhaps there is a link here somewhere. Thanks.
