Hi Nancy, it's in Black "Surnames of Scotland" where it means
mac Gilla Eidich or son of Eidich's gillie. It is documented
in Scotland in 1197 but George M'Clatchy, a native of Ireland,
joined the Church of Scotland in 1840 in Ayre, so apparently
there were Irish ones as well.
