Hello Linda and all members of this list,
For what it is worth......
All of my ancestors were in this country by the mid-1700s. They were all
farmers.
I was born on a Wyoming ranch operated by my father who was raised on an
Illinois farm.
He was very interested in my genealogy research and our farmer ancestors.
One day, I mentioned that I thought it odd that they moved and moved and
moved
again.
My father said the answer was really very simple. Commercial fertilizers
have only existed these last fifty years. Prior to that time, when the
fertility of the soil grew weaker, the crop yield became less and less. This
forced the farmers to seek "virgin" soil. In most cases, it was a "forced
march" and not a "whim" that made farmers move.
I really enjoy this list. The wealth of information that passes through
here is absolutely amazing.
Donna in Wyo.
