Dear List Members,
Found this book Store in Minneapolis, MN a year or so ago when I
searched for a copy of MacLysaght's "Surnames of Ireland": Irish Books &
Media, Inc. I purchased a copy for about $11.00 (US), now listed for
$13.95. It contains brief info on 4,000+ names of all of Ireland, gives
origins, meaning of Gaelic names and areas where that name is commonly
found. They put me on their catalogue list.
They also have "The Book of Ulster Surnames" which might be the newest
title of Robert Bell's 500 most common surnames of Northern Ireland,
but check that if you're thinking of buying it. It lists for $19.95.
Note:
I have no financial or any other interest in this store, just passing
on info. They can be reached at 800-229-3505, e-mailed at
. The above two titles are backlogged, so if anyone is
interested in the waiting period, calling might be best.
They have categories for Genealogy, history ancient and recent, language
tapes, art, cookbooks, Celtic folklore and mythology, poetry, etc.
Lots of stuff from the Republic of Ireland but enough on NI to make
it worth checking out.
The second part of this posting is to see if any List members have read
a book entitled "Clans and Families of Ireland and Scotland, an
Ethnology
of the Gael A.D. 500 - 1750" by C. Thomas Cairney (no date listed). If
so, is it worth buying? Has anyone read anything by the author? It's a
little over 200 pps. plus appendices and I am wondering if this small
book can do justice to the subject over so lengthy a time period.
Can any body help me out? I can't get to the library until late next
week, so any info would be welcome.
TIA,
Daphne Jacob
