Subject: MacGregor - name proscribed in 1617 - effect on records
Date: Sun, 19 Mar 2000 11:22:03 +1000
When the MacGregor name was outlawed in 1617 and MacGregors took up new names such as Greig, Greirsons etc and my family name of Carse (Carrs, Cass, Kars etc) how were the records of births and marriages effected?
If a MacGregor male married prior to 1617 I imagine the marriage might have been recorded as MacGregor and children born prior to this date also MacGregors. What happened after 1617? were new children and the father both recorded under the new name? Were the old records prior to 1617 adjusted? What should we expect to see in the old records today?
This should start a good (and hopefully useful) debate <grin>
