Subject: Warning from ListAdmin: Virus invades us.........
Date: Mon, 20 Dec 1999 08:57:12 -0800
Hi folks, there's a nasty computer virus going around. It shows up in an
attachment whose name varies. One indication is in the body
of the message was the http address "stuart messagemates.com".
DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT.
It opens your address book and sends out email to those in there. If you
had a rootsweb list there, it sends email to the list. The email does not
go to the list. It goes to the list admin because rootsweb lists will not post
any email with an attachment. If the list admin doesn't know about this
virus and opens the attachment, the list admin is infected.
I have received a number of these emails, folks. Some of you are infected.
Here is what EVERYONE needs to do.
1. Do not open ANY attachments, even from friends, unless you know what
is in the attachment. It is your friends who are most likely to send a virus
to you. In my case, this included all Christmas Ecards. Sorry, but I just
can't take the chance, folks. So don't send me any gif's, etc, because I won't
be able to open them up. I like my data too much to take the chance.
2. Run up-to-date virus protection. If you do not do this, you could use
all your data that you've worked so hard to gather.
Techy-guys: this is a low-tech message meant for all humans, elfs,
and fairies on these lists. Yeh, there's more details, but please DO NOT SEND
ME EMAIL about it. Find another way to flex your brain-muscle. (No matter
how I ask this some male sends me emails full of techno jumble, which I
delete. I am a computer pro too, and if I wanted to post the details I would.)
Have a happy virus-free holiday,
Linda Merle, embattled list admin
