Hi John,

It is worth checking Civil Registration in 1853 for his birth. You can get
that at LDS. And checking all the church records you can. Fast way is
to run him through the Ulster Historical Foundation's Indexes. Also
in 1853 you have Griffiths. SH ouldn't be hard to locate these folk in
it -- unless they left before hand. Recall that the published Griffiths is
just one part. There are work sheets where folk may appear. See
Tony McCarthy's "Irish Roots" book for a sensible, understandible
explanation.

Check as many Civil Registration indexes for children whose parents
are these two -- note where they are having kids! (this is a 'brute force"
methology).

Check church records in Scotland to see if you can find indication of
him joining the church (and it might say where from) and when he got
married, it might say where he came from specifically. Again you need
to get access to the actual church record. Which one? Check who married
them i the marriage certificate. You might need to hire someone in Scotland.
Too bad no one was there in 1851 -- in that year the certificates had a lot
more info.

Also check probate records in Scotland in the chance he left something
to family still in Ireland. Check the 1881 Scottish census -- I saw a lot
of "County Downs" in it last time I checked. A lot of folk apparently gave
counties.

Best of luck,

Linda Merle
