The significance is that often ships bound for America advertised. Also when
immigrants arrived, they would publish a joint letter saying they had arrived
and attaching their names. This served as advertisement for the ships too.
You can also get this info in Northern Ireland at the Ulster American Folk
Park, which has a database of emigrants letters and such.

Linda, Many thanks for this one. A GREAT site!!! Found 19 hits for my
McMECHAN surname alone.(any McMeechan sighting makes a great site <G>) With a
little practice the abstracts start to make sense and it helps to read the
explanation of the coding. Very interesting insights to life in Belfast in
the 1700s.
