Michael J. Obrian has written several articles about the Irish migration to
New England back in the 1600s. It appears that Governor Winthop's family had
an estate in Southern Ireland and were very sympathetic to the Irish people.
He encouraged their immigration to what is now New Hampshire so you will see
many very Irish names on the records in the 1600s.
Also, prior to the Revolution, immigrants did not have a say on where the
ship they were on entered America. There were several instances where the
British decided that they needed more settlers in Canada so they simply
diverted th ships.
