Hi!
We found the same thing in Scotland and one of the staff in the Salt Lake
Family History Library said, that it was very common for new settlers to
record their vital information in the area of the USA where they first
settled, as well as it being in their Scotland community. We would think
the clerks would have indicated that they came from such and such and it
was a copy of the original, but maybe there was a matter of safety involved
and they didn't want to advertise exactly where they came from. Also, when
we move today across country or to a brand new area, don't we take our
medical/dental and financial records with us? Sometimes it is difficult to
put our minds in the same set as these early settlers, because our lifes
are so very different, or so we suppose, until we think carefully about it.

Just a thought, but maybe it will help and you can call Salt Lake to
verify. They are very willing to answer questions and help.
