I am new to the Scotch-Irish list as of today and have pasted information
below concerning the 3 earliest generations in my direct line. If anyone has
information I'd appreciate receiving it and will share all that I have.
Descending info is extensive.
Frances
Robert McGough came to America with his wife, Sarah Matilda, who is considered
by tradition to have been a CARSON, though this has not been documented. They
entered the New World through the port of Charleston, SC in 1773. One account
stating, "they arrived after a voyage of three months, very sick and weary."
(B.L. McGough, @ 1921) They arrived with a large party of relatives including
Carsons and McDowells. The McGoughs and Carsons intermarried several times
after coming to America. With them came their children, John, age 12,
Isabella, age 9, Robert, age 8, William, approximately 6, and Sarah and Mary,
ages unknown.
The first documented record of the family is where Robert purchased land in
Mecklenburg County, NC October 23, 1773. He purchased 150 acres of land on
both sides of McAlpine Creek for 80 pounds British. The land was purchased
from Patrick Jack and was witnessed by James Tate, Samuel Jack and Edward
Sharp.
Robert McGough dated his will October 29, 1778 in Mecklenburg County, NC and
it was probated January 1779. We surmise his death date as being November or
December 1778. Nothing is known about his place of burial or anything about
his wife following his death. His wife and six children are living at the
time the will was dated as he names all of them in the will. Mary is listed
as Mary Sharpe having by this time married John Sharpe. His wife is named as
executor as well as his son-in-law John Sharpe and John Jack. The will is
witnessed by John McGough (son) and John Jack. The estate at the time of his
death was worth approximately 1,357 pounds, 3 shillings.
Following is our direct line from Robert and Sarah Matilda through his eldest
son John and Elizabeth Carson. Each generation has many siblings not listed
