Hi, here as promised is the Welcome message. Henceforth I will
be saving in a folder entitled "Badguys" the emails of those who continue
to break the rules.

elcome to Scotch-Irish-L.

The purpose of this list is to explore the ethnic heritage of the Scotch-
Irish as well as assist you in genealogical research. These people are
concentrated in but not limited to Northern Ireland and/or the Province
of Ulster. The term has come to be used in the United States to indicate
all those who came from Northern Ireland but who were not Gaelic
Irish Catholic -- though many of them had Irish blood. Other names for
these people or subsets of these people include Scots Irish,
Ulster British, Ulster Scots, Orange. Some of them originated in places
other than Scotland, such as England, Holland and France.

The scope of the group reflects the language, history,
migrations, and the realities of researching public records
and genealogical data archives, and includes questions of
local customs and history, or of regional or national history
which affected the lives of these people.

Even if you are not specifically interested in genealogy, you have a
place here if you'd like to share what you know or learn about localities in
NI or elsewhere, language, history, culture, jokes, and music.

We recommend "lurking" in the newsgroup or mailing list
(i.e. reading messages, without posting anything) for a few days so
as to get an idea of how people typically phrase their postings,
and so learn how best to formulate any questions or comments,
before you start posting messages to the newsgroup and mailing list
yourself.

WHY IS THE NAME OF THE LIST "Scotch-Irish"?
This term has come to be used in the United States to indicate all those
who came from predominantly from Northern Ireland who were not Gaelic
Catholic Irish, though many of them had Irish blood. It includes
people of French Hugenot, English, Dutch, and other descent. Some of
these people lived in what is now the Republic of Ireland, not just
in Northern Ireland.

RULES

No profanity.
No politics.

APPROPRIATE TOPICS
The primary purpose of this group is the discussion of genealogy
and genealogy of Ulster Scots, including Ulster Scots diaspora.
For some people this means one thing: surnames.

Surnames
--------
Feel free to post surnames to this group. However be aware that while
you may find someone with the same interest or someone who can assist
you, the best place for surnames is the surname lists. So also post
them there for maximum coverage.

The other problem with surnames: boring, if that is all there is.

History
-------
A knowledge of history will assist you in finding -- and
understanding -- your ancestors.

Note: history is subjective and political. We may discuss various
historical views. We should always be polite.

Culture
-------
If you do not live in Ulster, or even if you do, your understanding
and search for your ancestors may be enhanced by a greater understanding
of culture. Like all culture, Ulster Scots culture has changed with
time. Consequently some members of the diaspora may have a different
cultural understanding than you do. It is wonderful to discuss the
differences so that we can be aware of them. It is not wonderful to
insist that your view is more correct than another's.

Local Color
-----------
If you can provide additional details about a location which is under
discussion, please do! Many of us in the diaspora like details of the
towns and countryside where our ancestors lived. Sharing is greatly
appreciated.

Boundaries
----------
As we've already learned, there are no hard boundaries. Some of our
ancestors were Scots, some weren't. Some were Irish. Some were Gaelic
speaking Scots. Some were French Huguenots. Some were Protestant and
converted to Catholicism. Some went the opposite route. Some changed
several times. The conversation may vere widely from Irish earls
to highland clans. If the topic of discussion is not relevant to you,
introduce a topic which is. Just please avoid politics.

Current Events
--------------
Feel free to announce local events which are Ulster Scots related.

Commercial Posts
----------------
While volume on the list is low, please feel free to post commercial
posts -- just make sure that it is clear that the post is commercial.
