One of the original Plantation families in Co. Fermanagh was the Balfour
family. By 1738 the Balfour family had died out in the male line. It was
kept going by two nephews in the female line called Townley who
successively, in 1738 and again in 1759, changed their names to Balfour.

Are changes in names a characteristic of Celtic societies or are name
changes common throughout British culture for purposes of succession of
title?

Are there any comprehensive records of these changes of name?
