Hello, I am new to this list, I'm searching for information on the following
HILLs who settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania in the mid-1700s:
(1) JOSEPH HILL was Scots-Irish, the son of Thomas Hill and Elizabeth (Atwell)
Hill, born 1748 in the village of Hills Borough in County Down, Ireland. In
1766, Joseph (who was 18) came to America, to New Castle, Delaware, with his
widowed mother and his brothers John and William. The ages of John and
William are not known. By 1784, when Joseph was 36, he had settled in
Bethlehem township, Washington County, Pennsylvania where he purchased a 600
acre parcel of land which he named Hills Borough. It is possible that Joseph
Hills brothers John and William also settled in Washington County,
Pennsylvania. Families generally migrated together.
(2) The 1790 Census and the 1793 Tax List for West Bethlehem township,
Washington County PA include a WILLIAM HILL, who is believed to be the brother
of Joseph Hill of Ireland. William died in 1796, leaving his wife Elizabeth,
children Stephen, Ann and others, and the witnesses to his will were Joseph,
John and Stephen Hill.
(3) In 1790, a JOHN HILL purchased the land parcel next door to Joseph. It
had been a land grant surveyed for George RIGDON and subsequently sold by him
to John Hill: Warrant granted to the said George Rigdon dated 5 September
1787 who by deed dated the 20 February 1790 conveys the land to the said John
Hill in fee. This John Hill may have been the brother of Joseph Hill (1)
above.
(4) There was also a SAMUEL HILL living in this area, who died in 1808.
(5) The East Bethlehem township, Washington County PA Tax List for 1793
included STEPHEN HILL. "Stephen Hill, an early resident of West Bethlehem
(sic), was born in Ireland. He lived in Bradford County, PA; came to
Washington County and settled on Plain (Plum?) Run; erected a distillery and
horse-mill. Married Mary Welsh. (The 1796 enumeration of "Inmates and
Tennants" of East Bethlehem Township included a "Steven Hill, Weaver;
Landlord: Joseph Hill.")
(6) The West Bethlehem township, Washington County PA Tax List for 1793
included ROBERT HILL. "Robert Hill was born in County Down, Ireland and came
to America in 1768. He settled in Washington County, Pennsylvania (where the
village of Hillsboro was named in his honor). After his marriage to Rosamond
Welsh, the couple emigrated to Jefferson County, Ohio some time before 1806
and settled near Steubenville."
-- Ohio Tax Lists confirm a Robert Hill in Steubenville, Jefferson County,
Ohio in 1807-08-09 and 1810 (and the U.S. Census places him there through
1840). Other records include this information:
-- "HILL, Robert, came to America 1768, born 1761 in Ireland, died 1845.
Came here with his parents, lived in Hartford County, MD, Washington County,
Pennsylvania, thence to Ohio, enlisted September 4, 1782 in Capt. Abner
Howell's Co., 3rd (?), Washington County, PA, bur Hill Private Cemetery, near
Steubenville. G.M."
-- Robert Hill, born 1761 in County Down, Ireland and came to America with
his family in 1768. He lived in Harford County, Maryland; Washington County,
Pennsylvania (where "the village of Hillsboro was named in his honor"); and
served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War. Robert
married Rosamond Welsh, and settled near Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio,
in 1806.
*******NOTE: Stephen Hill married Mary WELSH, and Robert Hill married
Rosamond WELSH - both daughters of John WELSH and (7) ELEANOR HILL.
(7) ELEANOR HILL was born 29 October 1744 in Hills Borough, County Down,
Ireland, daughter of Thomas HILL of Hills Borough. She married John Welsh in
Ireland in 1761 and they traveled to America in 1766; lived in Harford County,
Maryland until the 1780s when they emigrated to Washington County,
Pennsylvania where John Welsh purchased land in Bethlehem township near Joseph
Hill. Eleanor Hill Welsh was probably the sister of Joseph Hill (1) above;
making her daughters Mary Welsh and Rosamond Welsh the nieces of Joseph Hill -
indicating that the spouses of Mary Welsh and Rosamond Welsh, Stephen Hill and
Robert Hill respectively, were possibly not closely related to Joseph Hill.
