Joe: Thanks -- anything is possible. It was spelled WILMITH on his
marriage record, and we found it as Wilmarth and Wilmouth on land transfer
documents. We did not find any document with the spelling Wilmot, but we
located documents only in Clermont Co. OH and Butler MO -- haven't been able
to trace them any farther back. Oral family history: "Three brothers
immigrated to NY, and each deliberately used a slightly different spelling
of their name to differentiate between the branches". No mention of where
they came from, or of the original spelling, just that our branch was
WILMOTH. Also no mention of what direction they took to get to OH from NY,
or how many generations it took. As I have posted many times, my ggf, John,
was said to be a "riverboat man", so may have used that route. Thanks
again, Virginia.
