Hi Linda, yes it does happen. My great grandfather falsified
the identities of his mother's parents on her death certificate
in order to expunge the name of her family from the family
tree. Unfortunately.....he wasn't too smart. Even ourselves
could figure out it wasn't too likely these folk could have
given birth to our gg grannie at ages 2 and 3.
This falsification was in Western PA and we deduced the
truth from census records and deeds -- then located a very
elderly cousin who recalled the rumors of what his dad and
our ggranddad had done -- at least 10 years afterwards the
rumors were still afloating. You've seen "Far and Away"??
This chapter in Irish history is entitled "Not Far Enough".
In our case the poor Irishman died at age 29, leaving a widow
and 2 children. She had to return to the family farm (in
their case, 2000 aces) to work as a servant. It appears this
didn't make a good impression on the grandchildren who
grew up to be very much the sons of the poor Irishman--
with a large grudge against their grannie to boot.
We are now trying to locate the expunged ggggrandparents
(Alexander and Isabella MARSHALL) in Ireland. Their children
keep changing their minds in the censuses over whether they
were born in Ireland or America. I suspect when we do find
them there will be some scandal awaiting us. At this point
we expect it of them and will be disappointed if we don't
find a good one. Supposedly they are from Tyrone unless we got
the wrong ones -- these ones came with no kids, though,
like I said, sometimes their kids claim to have been born
in Ireland, though I doubt it -- we got them placed in PGH
earlier than the kids were born but for our gggrannie.
This line regularly stole from one another. Her brother in
law later defrauded the gggrannie of some property she
inherited. My sister suspected this (Lord knows how...) and
decided to go to a certain courthouse to find proof. That night
the gg uncle, who died ages ago and whom we never met, appeared
in her dream -- threatening her and telling her not to go to
that courthouse. She went anyway and found the proof that
the bully had defrauded our gggrannie. Needless to say,
they are among our "favorite" ancestors.
