Hi All,
I thought I'd post this to the Scots/Irish list even though this is in
reference to Scots emigrating to Johnstown NY, 1773. Some may be looking
for Roman Catholic Scots/Irish thinking they came from Ireland?
In "Butler's Rangers" by E. Cruickshank >>>
In 1773, 600 Highland Scots (from Glencoe) immigrated to Sir John Johnsons'
estates in the Mohawk Valley, by invitation, established as tenants and
supplied with 2000 pounds worth of cattle, implements etc (they were Roman
Catholics). I'm currently looking for this list (unfortunatly this
reference book is devoid of a Bibliography). The book refers to these
Highlanders as Loyalists during the American Revolution and most resettled
in Glengarry/Stormont Upper Canada.
The quote continues, the McDonells ( all 260) were of the Clan M'Donald,
coming chiefly from fam'd Lochaber and Glenmuir.
" Among the Highlanders who came over on the ship PEARL and who settled in
Kortwright were WILLIAM CALDER, John Cameron, Hugh Fraser, John McKay, Neil
McKay and William Rose."
Does anyone have a Ship list for these emigrants??
Cheers
