Subject: "Ulster Scots and Blandford Scouts" REVIEW

Sorry, I knew I should have done this from the beginning. Here's the review
of the book from the NEHGR:
"Ulster Scots and Blandford Scouts, by Sumner Gilbert Wood (Bowie Md:
Heritage Books Inc., 1997. Softcover, 436 pp., illustrations, maps,
bibliography, appendixes, indexes, $25.50 plus $4.00 shipping). Order from
Heritage Books Inc., 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 300, Bowie, MD 20716
A reissue of Wood's 1928 account of the founders of Blandford MA, the book
is at once a history of Scots-Irish emigration to America and of the
migrants' experiences in 18thC New England. Wood recounts the travails of
the Scottish Presbyterians in 17thC Ireland, and then follows them to
Londonderry NH and Boxford, Bradford, Framingham, Hopkinton and Suffield,
MA. In the early 1730s, the Hopkinton church split into factions; as a
result, New Glasgow (now Blandford) was settled by the dissentients, among
them BLACKS, FERGUSONS, HENRYS, KNOXES and STEWARDS. The second half of the
book describes Blandford life in the middle decades of the 18thC, closing in
the decade leading up to the Revolution, by which time the first generation
of settlers was dying out. Of particular value to the genealogist is the
20-page appendix (with the misleading title of 'Genealogical Tables')
devoted to Blandford births, marriages and deaths, and cross-referenced with
the relevant vital records of Hopkinton and Framington." The reviewer was
Scott C. Steward, and I hope I don't get into trouble quoting this nearly
verbatim, but it really is an excellent background book for NE Scotch-Irish
immigration.
Cheers to all,
Mary
