One reason they did not smile is the amount of time they had to hold still
while the picture was being taken. Unlike our quick cameras of today they may
have to stand and or sit motionless for 5 minutes while the film exposed. I'd
frown too wouldn't you!!!
Saw one of my husband's family early tin types. His male ancestor appeared to
have 6 fingers. but really only had five. He moved somewhere during the
exposure time making a double image.
It also took a long time to get it all set up and everyone standing just right
so they were hot and tired by the time the picture was even ready to be taken.
