Keep in mind that the 'speed' of light-sensitive materials was increasing all the
while; if a picture was taken a few decades after the earliest (I'm not a photo
historian, so don't have specific dates/times in mind) the material might not
have needed more than one or two seconds. The studio doubtless had large
south facing windows, and thus *lots* of daylight.

Of course, gas might have helped! <g>
