In the infancy of photography, because of long exposure (to the film) times,
people actually had their heads clamped in back to hold still or were forced
to hold still for minutes on end to get a clear picture.

Of course I've always thought the reason the women looked so dour is because I
suppose I would too if I birthed a child every year my whole young life, lost
2 or 3 of them to disease and manually washed, cooked, cleaned and farmed. I
think they were just TIRED......
